Many parents are accustomed to pouring hot water into a basin first, and if they are not careful, it can become a risk of burns. Therefore, when bathing a baby, be sure to pour cold water first and then heat the water.

★ Applying soy sauce to the baby’s injury area not only fails to alleviate the condition, but also continues to stimulate the wound, deepen the severity of the injury, and increase the chance of infection.

Baby’s skin is delicate, and once burned, the degree of injury is much more severe than that of adults. If parents cannot determine the degree of burns, they should immediately take the baby to the hospital for examination to avoid affecting the treatment effect.

On site first aid for burns

If a baby is accidentally scalded, parents must remain calm and provide on-site first aid to minimize the damage caused by the burn. First aid can be simply divided into 5 steps.

★ Rinse: Quickly rinse with running tap water for at least 10 minutes to quickly reduce skin surface heat. Treating the burned area with cold water can neutralize the remaining heat in the burned skin, reduce further thermal damage, quickly cool down the wound, and prevent scar formation in the burned area.

★ Taking off: During the process of taking off clothes, due to the anxiety of parents at this time, they often randomly pull off the baby’s clothes, especially when the arm is scalded, they pull off the sleeves. This way, due to the friction of the clothes on the scalded skin, it often aggravates the damage to the scalded skin, and even pulls off the injured skin. After soaking thoroughly, be careful to remove clothing. If necessary, you can use scissors to cut open the clothes and temporarily retain the part that adheres to the wound, trying to avoid breaking the blisters of the wound.

★ Soak: Continue soaking in cold water for 10 minutes to reduce pain and stabilize emotions. But if the burn area is relatively large or the baby is young, there is no need to soak it for too long to avoid excessive temperature drop or delay treatment.

★ Cover: Cover the burned area with a clean towel, or cover with food safety film or sterile gauze. Do not apply topical medication or use folk remedies casually. These methods may not help with wound recovery and are prone to infection. The coagulation and adhesion of the wound can also increase the difficulty of the doctor in handling the wound, affecting the doctor’s emergency treatment and judgment of the injury situation.

★ Delivery: Except for minor burns that can be taken care of by oneself, it is best to send the patient to a nearby hospital for further treatment. If the burn is severe, it is best to transfer to a hospital with a burn center for treatment.
