Pregnant women sometimes experience pain in unexpected places and suddenly feel the need for labor. When there is no doctor or midwife on site, the following methods should be followed for treatment.

First aid measures

1. Let the parturient lie flat on a clean bedding and take shallow chest breathing to alleviate labor pain.

2. When the head and shoulders of the fetus are exposed, gently support them with both hands to slowly give birth.

3. The fetus must cry upon landing. If it does not cry, it is often due to the presence of amniotic fluid in its mouth and should be aspirated.

4. When the umbilical cord is not pulsating, use a disinfectant thread to ligate it several centimeters away from the baby’s abdomen. It is best to wait for the doctor to cut the umbilical cord. If it is impossible for the doctor to come, you can use a scraper or scissors to disinfect with alcohol or fire before cutting the umbilical cord.

5. If the baby is not breathing, mouth to mouth artificial respiration should be performed.

Precautions

1. To handle sudden childbirth, sterile procedures should be performed. To prevent newborns from getting tetanus, it is still necessary to immediately ask a doctor to inject tetanus antitoxin.

2. When performing umbilical cord ligation, disinfected thread should be used to wrap around the root of the umbilical cord close to the baby’s navel, tie it tightly, make two tight buckles, and then wrap it around again before tying the knot. Also, close to the mother’s side and more than an inch away from the first ligature line, tie it again with the line and fasten it tightly. Cut the umbilical cord between the two ligatures and wrap the severed end with disinfectant cloth.

3. The placenta is often delivered within 15-30 minutes. If it has not been delivered for a long time, attention should be paid.
