Difficulty in ensuring safety in base sheds
Compared to farmers who are completely exposed to the fields, the working conditions in various planting and breeding bases may be better because they usually have temporary buildings such as sheds. But according to the reporter’s understanding, because these sheds do not have lightning protection facilities, lightning accidents also occur every year and account for a large proportion.
On June 22, 2006, at around 11:00 am, 9 migrant workers from Dongqun Village Committee in Changsa Town, Wenchang City, unfortunately suffered lightning strikes while running into a work shed in a watermelon garden. 2 people died on the spot, 2 others injured their arms, and the others felt electric shock.
According to incomplete statistics from the provincial meteorological department, in recent years, the number of deaths caused by lightning strikes in the fields such as Tianyang and breeding bases in our province has accounted for more than 70% of the deaths from lightning accidents. In this regard, experts remind that before the rainstorm, field operators should quickly find a safe place to take shelter in case of accidents.
A person in Tianyang is like a “lightning rod”
Due to long-term work in the fields and slopes, farmers inevitably encounter thunderstorms. At the same time, due to the lack of corresponding buildings to avoid in the current Tianyang area, people have become the “commanding heights” in open fields and are very easy to become targets of lightning strikes.
On June 22, last year, lightning struck a farmer working in the field in Wancheng Town, Wanning City, and the deceased’s hair and clothes were all burnt.
According to the statistical data provided by the provincial meteorological department, there are many lightning accidents similar to those that occurred on Tianyang in our province.
Experts remind that on thunderstorm days, people in open areas are like “lightning needles” and are very susceptible to lightning strikes. At this point, people can quickly find low-lying terrain, try to lower their center of gravity and reduce the contact area between the body and the ground. They can squat down, put their feet together, place their hands on their knees, and bend forward. If you wear a raincoat at this time, the lightning protection effect is better.
Underneath the big tree lies a hidden “killing machine”
On the afternoon of April 27, 2005, a strong thunderstorm occurred in Team 11 of Baisha Furongtian Farm. A worker named Ye Guikai, who was sheltering under a tree, was killed by lightning on the spot.
The investigation by reporters found that on thunderstorm days, not only is it easy to be struck by lightning while hiding under trees, but it is also very dangerous to pass under large trees. On May 9, 2005, an accident occurred at Longlou Middle School in Longlou Town, Wenchang City, where a teacher was injured by induced lightning while riding a bicycle under a coconut tree.
Experts remind that thunderstorms can also cause lightning strikes under trees before rain falls. Therefore, when encountering thunderstorms or thunderstorms, people should try to avoid getting close to the bottom of large trees, let alone taking shelter under the trees. As a last resort, it is necessary to maintain a distance of at least 3 meters from the tree trunk, squat down and bring your legs together.
